We have set up a company called PERFECT COUSIN PRODUCTIONS (seriously) to produce a 40' doc for BBC N. I reland to be shown in April 2001. We are also making a 60' version to be transferred to 35mm film for some cinema projections. The presenter/interviewer is none other than JOHN PEEL. We have also received financial support from the IRISH FILM BOARD and the Arts Council of N.I. It is being produced by myself and directed by TOM COLLINS.
Please conatact us if you've any rare footage - pix - etc - if you think it is of any use to the doc.
An acoustic version of 'My Perfect Cousin' has also been recorded (the first time the band has recorded together since 1982!). The track was broadcast on Today FM in Dublin on August 3rd.

In Viz issue 101 Castle Music bribe Viz to plug 10 of their records. Number 9 is 'The Undertones (featuring Teenage Kicks)'. There is also an associated competition.
When the logo 'thE UNDERTONES' is used the word 'thE' generally runs from bottom to top except on the album The Undertones (Album)

In a recent repeat one heard Teenage Kicks being used as the intro music to 'Teenage Party' a sketch featuring Kev the Teenager. In the past year he has progressed to being a feature film star.
Teenage Kicks was played as part of the 'Golden Shower' slot where listeners have to write in (with a fountain pen) and request an 'oldie' record. The slot generally plays slushy or soul classics. This was requested by Helen and her 3 month old son Oliver having been married for 5 years and together for 18. I've never heard TK in this context before - early in the morning on the way to work - it brightened up a terribly wet day.
The 'Tones were on C4 news again last night! It was during a piece about the EMI/Warners merger. Apparently, a brief snippet of the TK video was shown followed by an interview with [Terry Hooley]. During said interview, there was a 10, copy of Sin Of Pride visible, strategically stuck to the wall!
[Terry Hooley] - he's the chap who owned/ran Good Vibrations (the label, not the Beach Boys durge). I believe, and the news report would certainly confirm, that he still runs a secondhand record emporium in Belfast. Apparently, it's not unknown for him to unearth the odd copy of Teenage Kicks-
Approx 30 seconds of "my Perfect Cousin" video was used tonight on the Channel 4 Evening News in an article about the demise of Subbuteo. It was great to see it again - the band lives on! Todays football results are :the Undertones 1 - Subbuteo 0.
The 'Tones even got a mention on the BBC's Millennium build up - Shauna Lowry was stood by the banks for the River Foyle and declared that the band were her "teenage heroes".
(Whether or not that means 'heroes that were teenagers' - or - 'heros when she was teenaged' is unclear.) Ed.
A hall of fame Undertone Connection by Michael Bradley
I went for a drink in a little Irish bar - on Fri 10th Dc and Feargal was sitting in the corner, so after a couple of lagers went over to say hi and he really is a top man.
Having heard about the reformation I surfed around and found I could hire the Undertones to play a gig for me. Unfortunately :-
The Undertones are an all-male pop a cappella ensemble. Primarily a campus- oriented group at the University of Notre Dame, The Undertones are composed of thirteen singers: seven seniors, two juniors and four sophomores. The music of The Undertones ranges from Billy Joel to Peter Gabriel, and everything in between!
Check out the opposition at rmariott - so what is inbetween an ex-boxer and a wallflower that sings songs that are 22mins long ? In the words of BJ "What else do I have to say".
The link between The Nerve Centre and The Undertones was forged when original Undertones guitarist, John O'Neill, began working there in 1990, following the breakup of his second band, That Petrol Emotion. The Undertones had been toying with the idea of reforming for a while, but when the Nerve Centre's Helena Hasson suggested that the band mark the reopening of the centre with a reunion gig, the idea became a full-on project.
Original members Billy Doherty, Mickey Bradley and Damien (sic) O'Neill were eager to give it another go, but original singer Fergal Sharkey declined the invitation to rejoin the band. Undeterred, O'Neill & Co. recruited another Derry man, Paul McLoone, to fill the vacant slot, and it looked as though the much-anticipated reunion gig was finally going to happen. There is talk, now, of some festival gigs.
Last Fri night at the Nerve Centre, Derry rock fans witnessed the return of the prodigal punks, and went appropriately bonkers, christening the new venue with sweat, spilt beer and an outpouring of sheer rock'n'roll fervour.
Recent gigs by a certain band mentioned elsewhere on this page have been at The Nerve Centre. The following is from their web site - visit it if you cant get there in person.
The Nerve Centre is an award winning multimedia arts centre which is engaged in providing access to facilities, training, education, exhibition, and production for many young people in Derry and Northern Ireland.
The main aims of the centre are to encourage participation in the arts in a way which is meaningful to young people today and in the process to provide the opportunity for young people to express their cultural identity and if appropriate, to take up the skills of today's cultural industry through training. There are over 60 students enrolled in full time vocational training.
In the first episode of the 2nd series called 'Catering' the quest to find a more mentally challenged workers than the previous week continues with a trio of ladder holding painters. One of these is described as being 'No Joe 90' the first time I've heard this idiom outside of 'Whats with Terry'.
The band did two nights at The Nerve Centre in Derry - Fri (19th) and Sat (20th) - Paul McLoone sang instead of Feargal who turned the rest of the band down. It went swimmingly
Discovered a Canadian copy of TK (Teenage Kicks) the other day - damn - the trainspotting is not complete
FilmFour UK Channel 4's pay-per-view offshoot is showing a season of films under the 'Teenage Kicks' bannern. These are celluloid representation of kids not the 'Tones version - there are some great films in the season but with a variety of ratings some best not discussed on a Family (Entertainment) site. FF is very worthwhile at £6 a month but on top of the £30 odd one already pays -
Teenage kicks appears as a party backing track in EastEnders. And that's all I care to know - here I draw the line on research. An audience of 18m should bring a nice little royalty check - good luck lads.

Jane Crinnion from The Guardian On November 6, 1985, after three weeks in the singles charts, Feargal Sharkey went to number one with A Good Heart. It was his third single since quitting as lead singer of The Undertones to become as a solo artist. It was the only one to reach the top of the charts. Sharkey stopped performing in 1991, choosing instead to work behind the scenes of the music business - in A&R and management. "I have a healthy disrespect for ageing pop stars," he says. "It would have been an awful lot easier for me to continue with my music and become a sad, old has-been, but I didn't want to fall into that trap." Two-and-a-half years ago, he decided to take time out. "I had spent 20 years of my life working 10-12 hours a day, either as a musician or in multinational corporations, and I needed time to reflect." Out of this period has grown a new occupation as a consultant, advising independent record labels and small music publishing companies. Last year, Sharkey was appointed to the board of the UK Radio Authority, where he is involved with issuing licences to radio stations, and in regulating and formulating their sound and content. |

About the Galway gig - they also played later that night in a hotel in Salthill, Galway. I managed to get tickets, and I brought a camera! Pictures available somewhere on my (underdeveloped) Website.
They played 7 Undertones hits, then played them all again for luck - fantastic!
Follow the CrickleNet link for the kosher pictures.

I've now seen the Ulster TV news report of the 'reunion'. They played two songs, Teenage Kicks plus one other (sorry, don't know which). The band look fantastic, and musically still sound great.
It may be coincedence, but the date this "reunion" took place was exactly sixteen years since the last Undertones show proper. Hmm-
Four members of the greatest band of all time reformed to play two numbers at the end of a Saw Doctors gig in Galway Ireland on 17 July 1999. Feargal Sharkey was the only absentee. Talked positively of doing so again.
